Dumbbell Buying Guide

4 min read

We often get asked about dumbbells - which style is best, what size is right for me, why do prices vary so much, does material matter and so on.

We want you to get the right equipment for you, so below we'll talk you through the different types of dumbbells, some things to consider when buying dumbbells, and hopefully help you find the right style (s) for you.

What Are Dumbbells?

Dumbbells are versatile pieces of fitness equipment used for strength training, muscle toning, and functional fitness exercises. They consist of a handle (often with knurling for grip) and weights on either end. Dumbbells come in various styles, including fixed weight (where the weight cannot be changed) and loadable options (where you can change the weight), to suit different training needs. Their compact design makes them a popular choice for both home gyms and commercial fitness facilities.

Types of dumbbells

1. Loadable Dumbbells

Overview:

Loadable dumbbells function like miniature barbells, allowing you to add or remove weight plates to adjust the load. This design is ideal for those who want versatility and space efficiency.

Advantages:

  • Customizable Weight: Easily adjust the weight to match different exercises and progressions.
  • Space-Saving: A single pair of handles can replace an entire set of fixed-weight dumbbells.
  • Cost-Effective: Requires less upfront investment compared to purchasing a range of fixed-weight dumbbells.

Considerations:

  • Adjustment Time: Switching weights can take longer than grabbing a fixed dumbbell.
  • Handle Length: Longer handles may feel awkward for certain exercises.

Options:

We offer loadable dumbbells in two styles, each with different options.

a.     Standard Size (28mm sleeves): boast a 28mm diameter shaft and sleeves, screwlock collars and options of 355mm, 420mm and 480mm length, all nickel plated. Perfect for anyone with standard weight plates.

b.     Olympic Size (50mm sleeves): boast a 28mm diameter shaft and 50mm rotating sleeve. Supplied standard in a 500m length, with spring collars or nylon locking collars.

Available in two styles:

·         Economy - nickel plated with brass with bushings

·         Pro - hard chrome with needle bearings

2. Fixed Head Dumbbells

Overview:

Fixed head dumbbells feature a set weight, with the heads permanently attached to the handle. Known for their durability and convenience, these dumbbells are a staple in both home and commercial gyms.

Advantages:

  • Durability: Solid construction reduces wear and tear.
  • Convenience: No adjustments needed; ready to use instantly.
  • Safety: No risk of plates loosening during workouts.

Considerations:

  • Space Requirements: A full set requires adequate storage.
  • Cost: Investing in multiple fixed weights can be more expensive initially.

Options:

We offer fixed weight dumbbells in three styles: Classic Rubber Hex, Pro Rubber Hex and Round Head Polyurethane (or TPU).

Choosing the Right Dumbbell for Your Needs

When deciding between loadable and fixed head dumbbells, consider:

  • Training Goals: For progressive overload, loadable dumbbells offer flexibility. For quick transitions and consistent weight use, fixed head dumbbells are ideal.
  • Space and Budget: Loadable dumbbells are space-saving and cost-effective, while fixed head dumbbells require more space and a larger upfront investment.
  • Usage Frequency: For high-frequency workouts, fixed head dumbbells provide convenience and durability.

Choosing the Correct Weight

Choosing the right weight for your dumbbells is a crucial step in tailoring your workouts to your fitness level and goals. Here are some general guidelines:

  • Start Light if You’re New: If you’re new to strength training, start with a lighter weight to focus on mastering your form. For most beginners, 2-5kg dumbbells for upper body exercises and 6-10kg for lower body exercises are ideal starting points.
  • Test Your Reps: Select a weight that challenges you for the last 2-3 reps of a set without compromising form. If you’re unable to complete your reps, the weight is likely too heavy.
  • Different Exercises, Different Weights: Compound movements like squats or presses often require heavier weights than isolation exercises like bicep curls or lateral raises.
  • Adjust As You Progress: Your strength will improve over time, so plan to incrementally increase the weight you use as part of your progression.
  • Ask for Guidance: If you’re unsure, consult with a trainer or fitness professional to help determine the right starting point for your workouts.
